WSC History
During the late 1980’s an innovative partnership was forged between local government and local industries to address concern over economic dependency on the nuclear industry, to stimulate the local economy and to revitalise West Cumbria. A major output of this partnership was to establish the Westlakes Science and Technology park, which is now a premier location for business on the west coast, and home to key organisations such as the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
The Westlakes Research Institute was setup to provide the academic/R&D focus that was vital to the establishment of the Park and which is integral to future growth and also to provide a focus for higher education in the county. Westlakes Scientific Consulting was originated as the commercial arm of the Westlakes Research Institute in the early 1990's.
Since its conception Westlakes Scientific Consulting has come a long way. The core capacity and capabilities in areas of Genetics, Epidemiology, Environmental Science and Policy studies has grown where Westlakes scientists have national and international reputation, and customers include public and private sector organisations throughout the UK and beyond.
On 18th August 2005 the Westlakes group was acquired by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). WRI is now the West Cumbrian campus of UCLan, it is developing and delivering higher education, providing R&D support to business, and engaging fully with the stakeholder community with the scale and diversity of support available through this large and successful university.
Westlakes Scientific Consulting continues to deliver high quality environmental and health related consulting, based on sound scientific practice and excellent customer service, working across industry sectors.
