WSC Mission

Westlakes Scientific Consulting Limited Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide value adding services to our customers, principally, in the areas of health science and environmental science. We will use our extensive knowledge base and our scientific skills to provide practical and effective solutions to customer’s problems.

Delivering Our Mission

Westlakes Scientific Consulting Ltd is part of the UCLan group and is an exemplar of ‘knowledge transfer’ and a significant contributor to the university’s objectives to support business and economic activity broadly.  WSC will continue to play a key role as the university develops its role and activities in West Cumbria, benefiting from additional skills and business support, reputational enhancement, and access to improved facilities.

Our business is established around two main themes:

1. Environmental Science consulting business, where the nuclear industry has been a core business sector, but diversification has produced business with other industries and regulators.

2. Epidemiology and radiation genetics.  Here the main business is to support the understanding of the impact of nuclear operations on workforce and community health.  This area is mainly funded directly by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), with additional funding via the US National Institute of Health, the European Union and the Department of Health.

To deliver research projects, both thematic areas use laboratory facilities, an extensive IT and database management capability as well as Intellectual Property and Knowledge Capital built up through previous successful assignments.

The Sickness Absence Management business that WSC has provided to Sellafield Site Occupational Health Services, and a gradual widening of the customer base as the nuclear industry changes its management structure is a strategically important, though smaller business area that complements both of the main themes.
