CFD Modelling and Wind Tunnels
Westlakes Scientific Consulting has a proven track record in providing modelling services to industry and public bodies, using the techniques of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling and wind tunnel testing.
Overview
Airborne pollutants are dispersed by atmospheric processes. Over a complex industrial site, or a major road junction in a city, the buildings will be many, varied and grouped closely together. Westlakes Scientific Consulting uses a variety of analystical techniques and models to respresent the airflow around building, building a picture of where the buildings will affect the airflow and hence may improve, or perhaps even hinder the dispersion of pollutants, be they industrial gases or car exhaust fumes.

CFD modelling of road junctions
CFD Modelling
- Can deal with a wide range of scenarios (e.g. undulating terrain, bodies of water, chimney stacks, buildings, road tunnels, agricultural areas, etc.)
- Emissions database used to model dust particles, gases and radionuclides emitted from a wide variety of sources.
- Steady state or short burst emissions.
- Accidental releases and safety case assessments.
Wind Tunnel Modelling
- Experimental measurement of dispersion of releases from stacks and fugitive sources.
- Flow visualisation.
- Laser Doppler Anemometry surveys.
- Can be used to validate dispersion model studies.
Our complex modelling clients include:
- British Nuclear Group
- DEFRA
- The city councils of Birmingham, Coventry, Leeds, Leicester and Sheffield
