Dust and Noise Assessments

Noise and Dust Assessment
Westlakes Scientific Consulting delivers high quality noise and dust monitoring services. Our team consists of Institute of Acoustics trained experts in occupational noise exposure and recognised experts in the field of air quality.

Noise at Work
WSC is experienced in the measurement and assessment of noise from a wide range of industrial sectors. We assess environmental noise in all types of workplaces to match our client’s requirements.
WSC can offer a professional risk assessment for noise that complies with the Control of Noise at Work Regulations (2005). We will submit a report listing the measurements conducted, our findings and advise on who is at risk, the location of ear protection zones and which employees should wear ear protection. We also offer advice on how to eliminate noise at source or, where this is not possible, reduced it to as low a level as is reasonably practicable.

Dust Monitoring
Dust can be a problem in almost any industry, from food production to engineering. Both short-term and long-term exposure to ambient levels of dust or particulate matter is associated with ill health effects including respiratory and cardiovascular illness as well as mortality. Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations (2002), employers are obliged to assess and appropriately manage any risk of employee ill-health occurring from exposure to hazardous materials. With growing awareness of the problems caused by dust, many local authorities are including dust monitoring as a planning requirement.

WSC employs experienced consultants and technicians to undertake monitoring for a wide range of particulate contaminants within air. Air monitoring strategies are designed to indicate levels of exposure and highlight the efficiency of any control measures in place. These results are compared with current exposure limits and where necessary advice is offered on the effectiveness of in-situ control measures. WSC will also assist in the formulation of appropriate risk management strategies.

Some examples of noise and dust monitoring programmes undertaken by WSC
• Noise monitoring at recycling depots
• Noise and dust monitoring at landfill sites
• Noise monitoring for heavy plant machinery
• Ambient particulate concentrations in urban environments
• Uranium and dust concentrations at mining facilities
• Particle size distributions of environmental and engineering material.
• Mobile laboratory for air quality sampling near foot and mouth pyres.
