Risk Assessments (human health & controlled waters)
Risk Assessment
A key function in the management of contaminated land is being able to assess what constitutes a risk. WSC carry out human health and controlled water risk assessments as parts of phase 1 and 2 investigations or as stand alone contracts.
In line with CLR 11 best practice guidance, WSC asses risks from potentially contaminated land based on a Conceptual Site Model for each site, which details the suspected pollutant linkages in terms of contaminants, pathways and receptors.
Human health risks may be assessed using Environment Agency Soil Guideline Values (SGVs), along with use of the CLEA model to derive Generic Assessment Criteria (GAC) or Site Specific Assessment Criteria (SSAC).
Risks to controlled waters may be assessed using tools such as the Environment Agencies Remedial Targets Methodology (P20) and comparisons with Water Quality Standards (WQS), UK or World Health Organisation drinking water standards.
We provide clear advice appropriate to the site regarding legislative requirements to assist with compliance and practical guidance on ways to mitigate any risks identified.
