Specialist Scientific Services
Specialised Field and Analytical Skills
With a team of experienced laboratory staff, in conjunction with dedicated laboratories and equipment, WSC undertakes field and laboratory analysis of a wide range of contaminants within water, air, soil and sediment. As well as measurements of environmental radioactivity, WSC can deploy monitoring campaigns to obtain data on meteorology, ambient background air and stack emissions and ground and surface water hydrology. WSC has successfully performed monitoring campaigns for non-standard observations that meet specific needs.
Our Services
Examples of field and laboratory programmes include:
- Measuring suspended sediment, current velocity, water level, salinity and turbidity of streams and estuarine biodiversity studies.
- Environmental monitoring and field support services (radiological, meteorological, alpha, beta and gamma radiometric analysis of environmental samples).
- Method development for radiochemical and radiometric analysis using our extensive practical experience.
- Measuring background levels of natural radioactivity and enhancements from industrial emissions in soils, sediments and biota .
- Effluent toxicity testing - interpretation and derivation of Environmental Quality Standards (EQS).
- External gamma dose rates - temporal and spatial studies.
- Radionuclide uptake experiments for flora and fauna to improve radiological dose assessments.
- Certain environmental samples can be processed in-house for 85Kr, 99Tc and 129I
- Collection and analysis of marine plankton for radionuclides
- Particle size distributions of environmental and engineering material.
- Groundwater level measurements in boreholes and piezometers and landfill leachate monitoring.
- Hydraulic conductivity measurements, using slug tests and borehole pumping tests.
