| Workington |
| Workington is an ancient market and industrial town nine miles north of Westlakes. It was the 18th Century exploitation of the local iron ore and coal mining that led to Workington’s industrial expansion in iron and steel manufacture. Following relocation of the Further Education College to a site between Workington and Whitehaven, the town centre is now undergoing major redevelopment to provide an improved shopping centre and facilities. |

| Workington Hall, built around a Pele tower dating from the 14th Century, once gave shelter to Mary Queen of Scots on her last flight from Scotland before her imprisonment and execution. Workington is on the Barrow to Carlisle West Coast Rail Link. It has a number of restaurants, pubs, and night clubs, hotels, library, museum, theatre, multi-screen cinema, bowling alley, supermarkets, PO and most national banks and building societies. |

| Whitehaven |
| Whitehaven is just three miles to the north of Westlakes. This Georgian seaport town was built on shipping and mining, thought these industries have long since disappeared. After receiving large grants for regeneration Whitehaven is now undergoing major development of the harbour area and community space. |

| Whitehaven hosts the bi-annual Maritime Festival which is focused around the harbour and includes visiting tall ships, aircraft flyover, stalls and street entertainment and live music. The Rum Story is set in the original Georgian shop, courtyard, cellars and bonded warehouse of the Jefferson family and tells the history of the UK rum trade which originally centred around the port of Whitehaven. |

It has a number of restaurants, pubs and night clubs., hotels, library, theatre, cinema, sports centre, private gyms, supermarkets, PO and most national banks and building societies. |

| St Bees |
| St Bees a popular coastal village three miles to the west of Westlakes. St Bees is named after St Bega who was shipwrecked on the coast in 900AD and founded a priory on which site now stands the 12th Century church of St Mary & St Bega, which was a Benedictine priory until its dissolution in 1539. St Bees Head, the most westerly point of Cumbria, is the start of the Coast to Coast Walk which finishes in Robin Hood’s Bay on the east coast. The headland is also home to an RSPB nature reserve. St Bees is on the Barrow to Carlisle West Coast Rail Link. There are a number of pubs, hotels, a restaurant, general store and PO with cash link. |

| Egremont |
| Egremont is a small market town four miles south of Westlakes. The wide main street is overlooked by the remains of a Norman castle. The nearby Florence Mine was the last working iron ore mine in Europe and now houses a heritage centre. Egremont has no rail link but is on a direct bus route to Whitehaven which passes the Westlakes Science & Technology Park. It has a number of pubs, library, sports centre, shops and banks with cash points. |

| Seascale |
| Seascale is a small attractive coastal village fourteen miles south of Westlakes. Following introduction of the Furness Railway in the 1850s it became a popular holiday destination for Victorian families. Many of the Victorian villas and boarding houses form the housing and accommodation today. Seascale is on the Barrow to Carlisle West Coast Rail Link and has hotels, golf course, bowling green, sports hall, library, shops, PO and bank. |
