Academic programme
The WRI-UCLan West Cumbria Campus offers a range of courses and research opportunities from foundation degree to study at postgraduate level. This programme is based upon the applied academic and commercial work undertaken at WRI for a range of commercial clients, and from in-depth scholarly work undertaken at the Institute, in support of our activities.

At Foundation Degree Level
A UCLan-validated Foundation Degree in Nuclear Decommissioning is offered in partnership with Lakes College, West Cumbria and GEN II. As part of a two-year programme, Westlakes provides modules in the following areas, which are taught in West Cumbria.

  • GOVERNANCE OF DECOMMISSIONING 1 - This module provides students with an understanding of the evolution of UK civil nuclear policy and the current national and international context of nuclear policy.
  • COMMERCIALISATION AND CONTRACTORISATION - This module provides students with a working knowledge of the key aspects of commercial management: from identifying a prospective opportunity in the nuclear industry through tendering to contract close, as defined by relevant EU procurement processes.
  • GOVERNANCE OF DECOMMISSIONING 2 - This module provides students with an appreciation of the complex range of factors bearing upon the governance of the nuclear decommissioning process. It also gives an understanding of key issues in the governance of decommissioning, including stakeholder relations, legislation and the key themes of openness and transparency.
  • DECOMMISSIONING, WASTE MANAGEMENT AND SITE REMEDIATION - This module provides students with the knowledge required to make informed decisions on decommissioning, waste management and site remediation, based on an appropriate understanding of legislative, technical, environmental, economic and socio-political issues.

At Postgraduate Degree Level
The WRI-UCLan West Cumbria Campus provides MSc modules under the Nuclear Technology Education Consortium (NTEC) scheme. These modules, which are also available as standalone professional development courses, are taught over one working week in West Cumbria.

  • DECOMMISSIONING / WASTE / ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT - Examines and explains the process of decommissioning and considers how the related requirements should be taken into account in plant and equipment design. It establishes the requirements of the decontamination and clean-up process. The principles of the disposal and storage of nuclear waste are identified. The module covers the environmental principles underpinning the management of nuclear waste.
  • ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT - Introduces the main scientific principles and legislative drivers underlying the carrying out of radiological impact assessments. It covers all of the environmental phases currently in receipt of radionuclide discharges from nuclear site operations: atmospheric, terrestrial and aquatic. The module establishes the tools and methods to assess radiological impact, demonstrating state-of-the-art assessment modelling practices.

The above modules are also offered under an MSc in Radiometrics at the University of Liverpool - for further details of this programme click on www.liv.ac.uk/study/postgraduate

  • ENVIRONMENTAL DECISION MAKING APPLIED TO THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY - Introduces the important role that public perception, attitudes and beliefs play in environmental decision making and demonstrates how industry and regulators could use this information. This multidisciplinary course demonstrates how scientific or technological solutions to such issues as contaminated land remediation or the disposal of radioactive waste must meet public expectations and requirements.

The above module is also offered on an MSc in Decommissioning and Environmental Clean-up at the University of Lancaster - for further details of this click on www.engineering.lancs.ac.uk/home

Each of the above NTEC modules is also available as a standalone professional development course in West Cumbria.
