Environmental Science - Environmental Monitoring

With our team of experienced technicians and dedicated laboratories and equipment, we are able to undertake routine monitoring for a wide range of contaminants within water, air, soil and sediment. As well as measurements of environmental radioactivity, meteorology, ambient background air and stack emissions, chemical and biological water quality, ground and surface water hydrology, we have successfully deployed monitoring campaigns for non-standard observations or to meet specific needs.

Examples of monitoring programmes include:

  • Formulating measurement schemes to determine uranium and dust concentrations at mines.
  • Use of a mobile laboratory for air quality sampling near foot and mouth pyres.
  • Measuring suspended sediment, current velocity, water level, salinity and turbidity of streams and estuaries biodiversity studies.
  • Environmental monitoring and field support services (radiological, meteorological, alpha and gamma radiometric analysis of environmental samples).
  • Method development for radiochemical and radiometric analysis using our extensive practical experience.
  • Analytical services including the assessment of microbial, trace metal and organic contamination of environmental samples.
  • Immunotoxicological and genotoxicological assessment of biological damage.
  • Measuring background levels of natural radioactivity and enhancements from industrial emissions in soils, sediments, biota .
  • Effluent toxicity testing - interpretation and derivation of 'Environmental Quality Standards (EQS).
  • External gamma dose rates - temporal and spatial studies.
  • Radionuclide uptake experiments for flora and fauna to improve radiological dose assessments.
  • Particle size distributions of environmental and engineering material.
  • Groundwater level measurements in boreholes and piezometers and landfill leachate monitoring.
  • Hydraulic conductivity measurements, using slug tests and borehole pumping tests.
  • Soil moisture measurements, including application of neutron and capacitance probes.
  • Landfill gas measurements, using FID, infra-red and chemical cell detectors.
