| Environmental Science - GeoScience |
| |
| The Geoscience Group provides integrated and authoritative services to both operators and regulators, which makes use of the Group's expertise in the following disciplines: |
| |
- Geology
- Hydrology
- Hydrogeology
- Geophysics
- Geochemistry
- Meteorology
- Sustainable Waste Management
|
|
 |
|
| |
|
| In particular, we have a proven track record in the delivery of commercial contracts and research in the following areas: |
| |
- Groundwater flow and contaminant transport modelling to track and predict the movement of contamination (radiological and non-radiological) through the subsurface.
- Site characterisation using methods ranging from desk studies to geophysical surveys (non-invasive assessment of subsurface targets) and complex multi-phase intrusive investigations.
- Establishing baselines for potential contamination.
- Development of conceptual models presented using state-of-the-art site visualisation tools.
- Tiered approach to risk assessments based on the Source-Pathway-Target methodology and using appropriate software (e.g. CLEA, LandSim, Modflow).
- Preparation of Site Reports and completion of Environmental Assessments for Integrated Pollution prevention and Control (IPPC) permit applications.
- Development and implementation of contaminated land strategies (including strategies developed under Part IIA of the Environment Protection Act (1990).
- Development and co-ordination of site sampling and monitoring strategies (soil, surface water, groundwater, landfill gas and meteorological data) in negotiation with regulators, where appropriate.
- Design and maintenance of bespoke databases (linked to Geographical Information Systems (GIS)) for storing and evaluating environmental monitoring and site characterisation data.
- Design and review of borehole networks for groundwater monitoring in line with current regulations.
- Setting control and trigger levels for radiological and non-radiological contaminants.
- Evaluation of contaminated land remediation strategies (against BPEO criteria) and risk assessments with particular expertise in radioactively contaminated sites.
- Provision of scientific, technological and public perception advice on alternative waste management methodologies.
- Environmental decision support/optioneering.
