First Westlakes International Conference on Nuclear Decommissioning
Nuclear Clean-Up: Skills, Education and Environmental Challenges (23rd & 24th October 2003)

The Lecture Theatre in the International Research and Graduate Centre held a full audience of 80 delegates, spanning academia, government and industry from across the UK, participated in a working conference debating two issues, ‘skills retention and transmission’ and ‘solving environmental objectives’, relevant to the future role of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. The debate was framed by contributions from the Rt Hon Nigel Griffiths MP (Minister with responsibility for Small Business and Enterprise in the DTI) and Rt Hon Jack Cunningham MP (MP for Copeland). The importance of Nuclear Decommissioning was put in the context of the NW regional economic strategy by Rob Johnston (on behalf of NWDA) and in a local context by Rex Toft (Cumbria County Council).

The skills debate was prompted by presentations from COGENT and from the NWDA and informed through a series of case studies including experiences from a partnership of companies, a small business and from the French Nuclear Industry and facilitated by Grahame Smith CBE. In addressing solving environmental objectives, thought provoking presentations from the NSD and experiences of work of the US DOE complemented by case studies from both the oil and gas sector and the nuclear industry stimulated a lively discussion resided over by Sir Martin Holdgate. The whole conference was captured on video that will form the basis of a publication of the outcomes.

In addition, delegates were able to network with local stakeholders from the public sector and local industry, at a Civic Reception and Dinner with over 100 guests, hosted by the Mayor and Mayoress of Copeland. There was very much a Cumbrian theme to the dinner. The Ennerdale Country House Hotel in Cleator Moor, provided a menu of Cumbrian food and the audience was entertained with Cumbrian anecdotes from John Bell, a well known raconteur in these parts. It was also pleasing to have been able to raise £777.82 for the Mayor’s charities through a raffle.
