Science week at Westlakes Research Institute

Working in partnership with the Royal Institution of Great Britain and the Royal Society of Chemistry, Westlakes Research Institute provided a suite of events during Science Week ’06 (10th-19th March) for West Cumbrian schools. Events included talks on the solar system, manned and unmanned space exploration, experiencing the reality of robotics and its various applications and the science behind a simple soapy bubble. Each event was fully subscribed and teachers and children alike became involved in trying to create the largest bubble ever seen at Westlakes!

Exploring Space (4 events) - This event blended science with engineering/technology and commenced with a lecture describing the different methods used to explore space: unmanned space exploration using automated spacecraft and manned exploration conducted by men and women. It included:

- Size of the solar system using an Earth globe and scale model of the Moon
- A short history of unmanned space exploration - how spacecraft are launched into space and where they have been
- Space explorers survival
- Manned space missions, including the Apollo missions to the Moon
- The future, sending people back to the Moon and on to Mars and looking at some of the challenges
|

Following the talk the children met with a local engineering company who are involved in the design and build of full-scale remote controlled buggies used on rough terrain - mountain rescue etc. This acted as an introduction to robotics and the technology involved in sending images over large distances. A live demonstration was provided.

Soapy Science made Fun (3 events) - The science involved in a simple soapy bubble was described and performed though the Chemistry of the bubble solution, the physics of bubble colours and the geometry of bubble shapes.

Teachers and pupils alike assisted in the demonstration and opportunities were provided to carry out simple experiments. The interactive demonstrations showed basic types of bubbles, simple science of soap, how to prepare bubble solutions and bubble tools. Experiments included the longest bubble seen at the Research Institute.
