Summer students 2007

In the summer of 2007 six West Cumbrian students were recruited by WSC as summer assistants.

Work programmes were developed for each student in order that they:

- Would be able to use their academic skills in an applied manner
- Would have an opportunity to develop their own skills and knowledge in a manner consistent with their academic and career needs
- Would work with professional staff in a commercial and applied academic setting, to understand the needs for quality, time management and health and safety issues
- Could make a contribution to work programmes that WSC required
|

In commenting on the success of this programme we can do no better than reproduce the reflections of two of these students. Firstly, a student working in Environmental Science undertaking a degree in Sustainable Development degree at the University of St. Andrews:

"During my time with Westlakes Scientific Consulting I have been involved with a range of projects, interacting with the whole company and the wider world. Firstly, I engaged in a research based project in which I created a document which breaks sustainable development into easier to understand segments, and then relates this to the concept of sustainable communities. The second research project I undertook was to create a central collection of indicators of sustainability for West Cumbria using data sources such as the 2001 Census. I have also been involved in more applied commercial projects, such as an expression of interest for a Strategic Environmental Assessment and working closely with Rick Wylie to develop the upcoming conference on Sustainable Communities.

The main benefit to myself from all of this, aside the focus and discipline a busy work place instils, would be the research. During my time here I've had to work on my dissertation proposal for my degree, and the work I have done has focussed my study and provided a wealth of information for when I start back at University in October. Secondly, the people I have met, the meetings I have attended and the discussions I have had have given my search for a career an interesting and exciting motivation and direction. My time with WSC has, ultimately, given me the experience to move into exciting areas post-graduation, and for that I'm both very proud to have worked here, and thankful of the opportunity."
|

Secondly, a student working in Central Administration undertaking a degree in computing and information at St Martins College, Lancaster:

"My past ten weeks at the WSC have been both enjoyable and insightful. The experience has given me an insight as to how a successful business operates and allowed me to develop and understand the skills I will require when I begin my own career. Some of the projects I was involved with included arranging the finance archive as to ensure that all the records from the last six years were easily accessible for the auditors. This allowed me to understand the impact of different legislation¹s that a business must abide to.

Whilst with the WSC I have also improved my time management skills by working to deadlines and having a number of projects ongoing throughout my time here.

I can now return to complete my degree with a much greater understanding of the business environment and implement my experience into my work. One of the modules I will be studying when I return to university is a reflective piece regarding work experience. So this ten weeks has been a really beneficial time for me. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to work with you!"

Clearly, these students benefited greatly from their experience at WRI.
