Rick Wylie gives a paper at the two-day UK Decommissioning
and Waste Management Conference at Rheged |

On the 17th October Rick Wylie Academic Development Manager of Westlakes Research Institute gave a paper at the two-day UK Decommissioning and Waste Management Conference at Rheged which was organised by the British Nuclear Energy Sociey.

This paper, titled Stakeholders, Socioeconomics, Sustainability was written in collaboration with Jonathan Jenkin, Strategy Manager and Terry Selby, Strategy Director of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

ABSTRACT OF PAPER "STAKEHOLDERS, SOCIOECONOMICS, SUSTAINABILITY"

With its focus upon the decommissioning of the UK¹s nuclear legacy and environmental restoration the activities and agenda of Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) are perhaps the most significant change in the UK civil nuclear industry in the last three decades. The decommissioning and clean-up of nuclear sites, like Sellafield and Dounreay, spells the end of an era for a number of 'nuclear communities' in the UK, as the legacy of the 20th century civil nuclear industry is managed away.

An essential aspect of the activities of the NDA, are relationships between a plurality and diversity of stakeholders. This paper argued that there is a deeper role for these activities. Drawing upon examples of successful sustainable community initiatives, it is argued that developing and maintaining interpersonal and inter-organisational relationships between stakeholders within communities are key to establishing the social and economic conditions necessary to enable a sustainable community to develop.
