Technical Support

As a result of providing the infrastructure for our services we have gained an in depth experience of several variations of UNIX:

- Solaris - our premier server platform chosen for robustness, security and scalability. We have experience on both Sparc and Intel hardware ranging from standard PC’s to high resilience Sun servers.
- Linux - a cost effective alternative suitable for many applications. We have deployed Linux mail servers as a zero administration service using the most modest hardware configurations.
- HP-UNIX, IRIX - less common alternatives used for specialised applications requiring specific hardware or software. We have provided hosting services for such platforms where companies own IT departments do not possess the necessary skills or resources.
|

Our staff are highly trained professionals with more than ten years experience of technical UNIX support. We also have similar levels of experience with VMS and the Microsoft server platforms of NT and Windows 2000. Relevant staff members hold Microsoft professional certification qualifications in this area.

Microsoft Windows with it’s powerful suite of desktop applications remains the most efficient and cost effective platform to meet the business computing requirements of the typical empolyee. However for many companies a significant problem is the integration of this desktop platform with non-Microsoft server resources. This is one of the areas where we have extensive experience and proven approaches to substantially address these issues. Particular highlights of our solutions include:

- The use of SAMBA to provide robust, high performance and low cost file/print share seamlessly integrated with the Microsoft desktop coupled with the option of using either the UNIX or Windows authentication mechanisms.
- Deployment of open, zero-license mail server products to produce a stable, low cost, high performance email infrastructure, (IMAP4, OpenLDAP, Sendmail 8) with connectivity to MS Outlook or other mail clients, (Netscape, Mozilla, Eudora).
- Custom web services integrating UNIX facilities into an internal portal of facilities for the user. For example password control, email vacation messages, bulletin board, shared diary facilities and so on.
- Integrated LAN services such as bulk PDF conversion for document archive utilising entirely open, zero-license products requiring no installation at the client.

Given our background in the nuclear industry and the management of sensitive medical data we have particular experience with regard to the security of IT systems. We offer these services in a consulting capacity providing advise on such areas as:

- Secure network design and policy management. Aspects such as server hardening, physical security, user education and so on.
- Secure remote access techniques. Mobile VPN, secure web site configuration, access control methods and encryption.
- Mechanisms to deliver sensitive data securely over public Internet carriers utilising either web traffic or email as the conveyance mechanism.

As a company with a strong scientific focus we are able to support specialised services outside the range of those offered by other IT companies. We currently manage services in collaboration with our areas of scientific speciality including:

- Urban air quality management services for local government using the Airviro software running under HP-UX and Linux. This facility makes use of both the companies IT skills and our environmental consultancy services. Local government clients include Sheffield City Council and Copeland County Council.
- Other environmental services for our Aquatic Pollution and Geoscience groups, requiring the use of several specialised applications running under Linux (Paneia) and MS Windows (ADMS, Aermod, Mike21) offered as consultancy services.
- Clinical Data Management - A highly regulated operation for which we operate Oracle databases under Solaris and utilise the Clintrial software. Requires extremely good quality of IT auditability in accordance with Good Clinical Practise (GCP).
- Genetics - A sensitive operation requiring fine grained access control mechanisms without hampering integration of lab equipment with local area network.
- Advanced statistics - A computing intensive operation requiring advanced desktop configurations and several UNIX orientated tools, (GLIM, Epicure).
