Facilities
We operate separate suites of laboratories reflecting our capabilities in Environmental Science and Genetics.

Environmental Science
The analytical laboratories support our environmental assessment, modelling and field work. The main facilities are preparation, radiochemistry and counting laboratories equipped for the receipt, processing and analysis of environmental and industrial samples. Analytical techniques include alpha, beta and gamma spectrometry; atomic absorption spectrometry, laser granulometry (particle sizing) and ion chromatography.

We also have the capability to mount atmospheric monitoring campaigns using high volume air sampling equipment, cascade impactors, NOX and SOX boxes. WSC has many years experience in measuring krypton-85 in the atmosphere and are one of only a handful of organisations in the world that can undertake this analysis.

Equipment for studying estuarine environments includes a MiniSonde water quality instrument.

Genetics
The Genetics laboratories, within the Division of Health Informatics, are equipped for cytogenetics and molecular biology. There are facilities for chromosome analysis, by both conventional microscopy and fluorescence in situ hybridisation, including specialised image capture and analysis equipment. The molecular laboratories house a range of PCR and electrophoresis equipment and a DNA sequencer for the rapid analysis of polymorphic variants.

In support of the molecular and cytogenetic capabilities, the laboratories have facilities for cell culture and cryopreservation and an X-ray set is available for the irradiation of biological material.
