Professor Steves Jones, Westlakes Scientific Consulting Principal Consultant and UCLan Professor of Environmental and Occupational Toxicology, gave his inaugural lecture at the Rosehill Theatre on 29th January.

His lecture, titled "Is Radiation Good For You?" captivated the audience with an examination of the historical attititudes to the medicinal properties of  radiation. The next thread of the lecture was a brief history of the universe that concluded we are all made of stardust that comes from nuclear fusion reactions in stars that existed billions of years ago.  To conclude, Professor Jones explored DNA and the effect radiation has on our bodies and how we evaluate that effect. Practical demonstrations included showing that phospate based fertilisers have easily measured levels of radiation, and a demonstration of the radon levels at the Rosehill site.

A wide and distinguished audience attended the event with representatives from academia, local governent, industry regulators and the nuclear industy itself.
