WSC Supervised Genetics Internship Student Wins UCLan ‘Best Intern Student 2008’

Genetics Internship Award 08

Samantha Murphy, a third year Forensic Science undergraduate at UCLan, was presented the award for ‘Best Intern Student 2008’ by Malcolm McVicar at the UCLan Intern Poster Presentation Event, 23rd October 2008.  Samantha presented results from her 10-week internship project, supervised by Dr Gillian Curwen, at Westlakes Scientific Consulting.

Samantha worked on the Genetic Consequences of Cancer Treatment Project (http://www.gcct.org/), namely investigating single nucleotide polymorphisms in Danish survivors of young adulthood and childhood cancer, their partners and offspring.  The internship programme was a forward-thinking initiative led by UCLan research staff that enabled over 40 undergraduate students drawn from subjects across the arts, sciences, health and business, to gain a real taste of academic research.

At the presentation students unveiled their research findings on a range of subjects including an analysis of social networking websites, the digital development of the regional press and the development of a manufacturing technique for wind turbine blades.
