Professorial award for Westlakes scientist

We are pleased to announce that Westlakes scientist Jordi Vives i Batlle has been awarded the title of Professor of ‘Environmental and Radiation Physics’ by the University of Central Lancashire. This professorship is awarded in recognition of his international standing as an expert in environmental radioactivity, with significant research and consultancy on radiological protection, radioecology and radiation dosimetry, and with a record of 75+ scientific publications to date.
Prof. Vives heads the Exposures and Effects Group and is a founder of the highly successful Westlakes Radioecology Group, as part of a strong Environmental Science team at Westlakes. He has a significant international research profile, being regularly invited to the International Atomic Energy Agency and the International Commission of Radiological Protection, as part of a global drive to develop an international framework for the assessment of the environmental impact of ionising radiation. Jordi’s research activities span a number subjects but the main focus is on modelling and predicting the transfer of contaminants (particularly radionuclides) from the environment to living organisms, and developing advanced physical methods for radiation detection and dose assessment.
On being notified of this award Jordi said ‘I would like to see this professorship as an opportunity to further develop the international profile of Westlakes - UCLan as a first-rate centre of excellence for studies on and teaching of the environmental impact of radiation. In this way, I hope to make it evident that World-leading research on the impact of nuclear energy is fully available in West Cumbria’.
