Airviro Air Quality Management System Case Study
Project: Airviro Air Quality Management System
Client: Sheffield City Council
The Challenge
Sheffield City Council (SCC) Environmental Protection Service (EPS) have a statutory obligation to review and assess the air quality within the city of Sheffield. Any data collected has also to be made available to the public.
The challenge posed to WSC was to provide the Council with a robust Air Quality Management System (Airviro) able to autonomously downloading real time data from several monitoring stations throughout the city, manage and archive the data and make it available for immediate use.
The Solution
WSC worked closely with staff from Sheffield City Council to evaluate requirements, WSC then:
- provided SCC with a digitally and physically secure server (hosted in the WSC offices);
- provided SCC with the Airviro Air Quality Management Software to meet the following objectives.
Data Collection and Validation
- Data are collected automatically from seven sites measuring meteorology and air quality in the city.
Data Presentation
- Used for production of graphics and reports for local stakeholders and submission to central government.
Dynamic emission data base (EDB)
- Provides maps of emissions across the city allowing the evaluation of policies to reduce pollution.
Dispersion module
- Applied to determine compliance with Air Quality Regulations and to assess proposed planning applications.
The Benefits
- Air Quality Management was achieved using an integrated system, improving effectiveness, and removing the requirement to maintain multiple software packages.
- Hosting the system at WSC removed the burden of data and equipment security and significantly reduced overhead costs for the council.
- Government requirements for providing online Air Quality data were met.
- Information was provided to local stakeholders, ensuring public acceptance of Air Quality Plans.
